Big Brother 28 producers are finally addressing one of the season’s biggest controversies: Did returning reality TV stars Rick Devens, Dee Valladares, and Angela Murray receive unfair advantages over the new Houseguests?
The debate continued throughout Season 28 and became even more intense after Rick Devens defeated Taylor Brown in a 6-1 jury vote to claim the $750,000 grand prize.
While some fans believed the three returning reality stars received special treatment, others argued that their previous television experience made them bigger targets.

Now, executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan have shared their perspectives in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, explaining why they believe the season’s twists gave both returning players and newcomers opportunities to succeed.
Big Brother 28’s Returning Icons Faced Accusations of Unfair Advantages
From the beginning of the season, the three returning players appeared to have certain advantages. Rick Devens and Dee Valladares had previously competed on Survivor, while Angela Murray was already familiar to viewers from Big Brother 26.
Unlike the new contestants, the three icons were the only players eligible to compete in the first Head of Household competition.
Their existing fanbases also appeared to give them an advantage in the America’s Vote twist, which allowed viewers to select Houseguests for a chance to earn a Time Capsule power or punishment.
Angela, Rick, and Dee were the first three players selected by viewers. That fueled criticism from fans who believed the returning stars had opportunities unavailable to the rest of the cast.
Producers Explain Why the Time Capsule Twist Was Fair
Addressing the controversy, executive producer Rich Meehan explained that the production team considered the returning players’ popularity when designing the season.
Rather than offering only three opportunities through America’s Vote, producers expanded the twist to six. According to Meehan, the decision was intended to ensure newcomers also had a chance to participate.
He also emphasized that receiving enough votes did not automatically guarantee an advantage. Each selected Houseguest still had to compete to earn a reward.
Ultimately, Rick Devens, Dee Valladares, and Drew Campbell successfully earned powers, while Angela Murray, Melody Morris, and Mallory Aurichio did not.
Meehan argued that these results demonstrated why the competition wasn’t simply handing advantages to returning players.
Producers Defend the Controversial Week 1 HOH Twist
Another major complaint involved the first Head of Household competition, which was restricted to the three icons. However, Meehan explained that winning the first HOH isn’t always beneficial.
While it gives a player immediate power and an opportunity to build alliances, it also forces them to nominate other Houseguests, potentially creating enemies early in the game.
He pointed out that some contestants deliberately avoid winning the first HOH for that reason. Meanwhile, the new Houseguests had their own opportunity to compete for safety on opening night.
Those players would also be eligible to compete for HOH the following week. Meehan acknowledged that both situations carried potential advantages and disadvantages.
Rick Devens Believes Being an Icon Was Actually a Disadvantage
Despite benefiting from some early twists, Rick Devens maintained that his status as a returning reality star made the game more difficult. During the finale, he acknowledged that the icons received certain advantages but argued that they also entered the house with enormous targets on their backs.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly after his victory, Devens explained that the three icons represented only a small portion of the cast. He argued that the new players had numerous opportunities to eliminate them throughout the season.
Instead, Devens credited his success to winning competitions, building relationships, and forming alliances. He also admitted that he initially expected more returning reality stars to participate, making the small number of icons particularly surprising.
Taylor Brown Strongly Disagrees With Rick Devens
Runner-up Taylor Brown offered a very different interpretation of the season. During the finale, Taylor argued that Rick entered the competition with privileges and opportunities that she had to work to obtain.
She later told Entertainment Weekly that she did not believe the new Houseguests competed on an equal playing field. According to Taylor, the icons’ popularity worked in their favor because several contestants were already fans of their previous reality television appearances.
Rather than immediately targeting the returning stars, some players admired them and wanted to work alongside them. Taylor believed that admiration gave the icons a significant social advantage that went beyond the competition twists.
Her comments highlighted one of the season’s central debates: whether entering the house with an established reputation is ultimately helpful or harmful.
Big Brother Producers Say the Icons Earned Their Success
Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan acknowledged that both sides of the debate had legitimate arguments. Grodner explained that although the returning players benefited from certain early opportunities, the competition lasted long enough for other contestants to challenge them.
Meehan also pointed out that the icons made important strategic moves rather than relying entirely on their reputations. For example, they quickly formed relationships with Kamu, Haley, and Chuk, who held power early in the competition.
Those connections helped establish alliances that protected the returning players as the season progressed. The producers also admitted they couldn’t predict how newcomers would react to competing alongside established reality television personalities.
Some might view the icons as immediate threats, while others could become loyal allies. Drew Campbell’s strong loyalty to the returning players was one development Meehan described as unexpected.
Was Big Brother 28 Really a Fair Competition?
Ultimately, producers maintained that the icons’ early opportunities were balanced by the risks associated with their established reputations. While returning contestants entered with experience, recognition, and potential fan support, they also faced the possibility of being targeted immediately.
For Rick Devens, those disadvantages were significant enough that he believed his victory came from navigating the game successfully rather than receiving special treatment.
Taylor Brown, however, continued to believe that the returning stars enjoyed advantages that newcomers couldn’t match. Although producers have now explained the reasoning behind the season’s controversial twists, their comments are unlikely to settle the debate among fans.
