After more than two decades as the Canadian home of Big Brother, Global Television Network has confirmed that the upcoming 28th season of the hit reality competition series will be its last on the network.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Global, revealing that Season 28 will officially premiere on July 9, 2026, with a special 90-minute launch episode airing at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The new season will also include the return of Big Brother: Unlocked on July 10, followed by another extended 90-minute episode on July 12.
In a statement shared by the network, Jennifer Abrams, Senior Vice-President of Content and Marketing at Corus Entertainment, said Global is proud of its long history with the franchise.
“We are incredibly proud to have been the Canadian home of Big Brother since its launch in 2000, bringing this series to audiences nationwide,” said Jennifer Abrams, senior vice-president, content and marketing, Corus Entertainment.
“As we look ahead, we’ve made the decision to move on from the series and refresh Global’s summer lineup. We are excited about the new programming opportunities this transition creates for Global’s schedule in the coming year and remain committed to delivering high-impact summer content, with a focus on broad, mainstream hits and new formats designed to engage audiences across both linear and streaming.” Abrams said.
Future scenarios for Canadian viewers
The decision marks the end of a major era for Canadian fans who have watched the long-running reality series on Global for 26 years. Since debuting in 2000, the show has become one of the most recognizable reality TV franchises in North America, known for its live feeds, strategic gameplay, dramatic evictions, and iconic houseguests.
Season 28 is shaping up to be one of the biggest installments in the show’s history. Julie Chen Moonves will return as host, while CBS has already announced supersized episodes and expanded programming throughout the summer. The upcoming season is also expected to mark a major milestone, with the franchise becoming the first primetime television series to reach 1,000 original episodes.
Although Global confirmed this will be the final season airing on the network, no official details have been released regarding where Canadian viewers may be able to watch future seasons of the series after 2026.
Fans online have already begun reacting emotionally to the news, with many calling the announcement “the end of an era” for Canadian reality TV viewers.
Despite the bittersweet announcement, anticipation for Season 28 remains high as viewers prepare for another summer filled with alliances, blindsides, competitions, and live feed drama when the series returns in July.
