Devens has shown throughout Big Brother 28 that he’s willing to take risks instead of making conservative moves. His decision to target Rome, one of the strongest figures on the opposing side of the house, earned praise from many viewers who appreciated his aggressive approach.
But after the latest Power of Veto ceremony, that praise has turned into debate.
Holding both the Head of Household title and the Power of Veto, Devens had complete control over how the week unfolded. He ultimately used the Veto to save Lyric, allowing Rome to become the replacement nominee while Melody remained on the block.

The move surprised many because Melody had previously appeared to be the houseguest Devens wanted to protect. Keeping her nominated meant passing up an opportunity to strengthen relationships with Melody and her allies, particularly Drew.
Instead, Devens chose a path that seemed designed around one major concern: the possibility that Rome could survive the week by winning the BB Block Buster competition.
If Rome does earn safety, removing Lyric from danger could prove valuable. During the week, Rome reportedly promised Devens a week of safety if Lyric was taken off the block, potentially reducing the chances of immediate retaliation.
There is also the possibility that the decision improves Devens’ relationship with Lyric. Some players believe she may be more willing than Melody to work with Devens and Dee moving forward. Keeping Rome and Lyric together also ensures they remain an obvious pair, making them continued targets for the rest of the house.
From a strategic standpoint, Lyric was considered unlikely to be evicted regardless. House conversations suggested that if Rome escaped the block through the Block Buster competition, Jason would likely become the primary eviction target. Since none of this week’s nominees were closely aligned with Devens, saving Lyric instead of Melody didn’t necessarily create additional enemies.
Still, the decision carries significant risks.
Allowing Rome and Lyric to stay in the game together means one of the season’s strongest duos could survive another week. Breaking up powerful partnerships often becomes more difficult as the game progresses, and this may have been one of the best chances to do it.
The move could also damage Devens’ standing with Drew if Melody becomes the player sent home, potentially widening the divide between the two sides of the house.
Whether Devens’ decision proves to be a masterstroke or a costly mistake won’t be known until the results of the Block Buster competition and Thursday’s live eviction. For now, it’s one of the most heavily debated strategic moves of the season.
