Jag Bains volunteers with the Special Olympics, and his family recently spoke out against his housemate Jared Fields’ use of an ableist slur. Jag, who has been in the Big Brother house for at least 40 days, has been constantly socializing with his fellow houseguests.
The Big Brother 25 houseguests rely on each other for entertainment and support because they are cut off from outside stimulation. Jag has been relying on people like Jared for his safety and stability in the game after being on the nomination list for several weeks in a row.
After Big Brother’s Jared recently used an ableist slur regarding another houseguest, Jag’s family addressed the situation on his Instagram account. “Jag is a huge advocate and ally for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities…although CBS has been silent about [Jared’s slur], we wanted to address this issue and spread awareness,” they said in a statement.
Special Olympics also shared a statement saying “The R-word has reared its ugly head again this time on CBS’s Big Brother,” “It’s that person’s right to use whatever words he wants, but it’s my right to ask him to stop using words that humiliate and mock people with intellectual differences,” the statement continues.
“There are millions of people with intellectual disabilities whose courage, kindness, and skill make the world more just and joyful. We should be imitating them, not those who use petty slurs to get a laugh,” concludes the statement from Special Olympics chairman Timothy Shriver.
What are your thoughts on Jared staying in the house after using a slur?
